Squint Shot 050612

This house facing Church street at the northwest corner of Church and Collins has been going through some major refurbishing.  From what I understand, this house used to be the home of the George and Ellen Spagnuolo.  It would have been but a couple blocks for them to walk to their store every morning to get to work.

Recently, I had the great pleasure to sit down with a friend and, over breakfast, he reminisced while I took notes.  As a young boy, he worked for the "Spags" -- as they were well-known as -- sweeping and scrubbing the floors.  He would do this for 35-cents an hour and it would take just about one hour to clean the floor.  Part of what brought this to mind was a recent squint shot, which you can find by clicking here, which shows some of the marble-square floor that used to be cleaned so diligently by him.

One thing I forgot to mention in this post is how Mr. George Spagnuolo would tell my friend to clean the floor. It would be:

"Usa-a-lotsa soap and make-a it shine like-a diamond."
